Mitochondria & Cellular Respiration

The mitochondria is often referred to as the powerhouse of the cell. It generates most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell's biochemical reactions.

"Chemical energy produced by the mitochondria is stored in a small molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP)."

Structure & Function They have a double membrane structure. The outer membrane is smooth, while the inner membrane is folded into structures called cristae. This folding increases the surface area for energy production.

Respiration Type Oxygen Required? ATP Yield
Aerobic Yes 36-38 ATP
Anaerobic No 2 ATP

Key Takeaway: Need to cross-reference with the textbook diagram on page 245 regarding the proton gradient.
